While working as a student with the Human Factors Team at Alberta Health Services, I was asked to assist in the design of a standardized algorithm that would guide physicians through completing a difficult airway management protocol. This would be used for training purposes as well as for procedures.
Through consulting with members of my team and receiving feedback from a group of physicians, I designed a one page system map that was consistent with the DAM crash cart and easy for physicians to use. By sketching, brainstorming and completing four different versions of the digital algorithm, we were able to then present the options to a board of Medical Professionals where they then chose their favourite design.
The algorithm has been approved for implementation across the Calgary zone as they are primed and have already started purchasing equipment and new drawers for their crash cart. The algorithm is soon to be implemented in all hospitals across the province.
